Gum lift, also commonly referred to as gum reshaping is performed to help correct uneven gum levels that lead to a gummy smile.

What is a gum lift?

Gum lift is a cosmetic dental procedure that raises and sculpts the gum line to improve the aesthetic appearance of one’s smile.

How is the gum reshaped?

There are a number of different cosmetic dentistry techniques that can be used to improve the appearance of the gums. A gum lift can involve using a laser to painlessly reshape the gum line, by increasing or reducing its length, so that it better fits the structure of the teeth. In more extensive cases the gum reshaping procedure may involve the removal of bone and gum through dental surgery. All of which can be assessed on a bespoke, individual consultation basis and performed in house at Selsdon Dental Surgery

What are the advantages of having a gum lift?

A gum lift can improve the appearance of one’s smile by creating a more even and better proportioned gum line. Gum reshaping can help resolve a gummy smile making both ones smile and face in general appear better balanced. The new improved gum line can also lead to healthier gums in the long term.

What is the downtime for a gum lift?

Most patients usually do not need to take leave from work/studies for a gum lift. After the laser treatment is completed, patients will be able to view the results immediately. Post procedure, there may be some swelling or redness in the gums, for which analgesia can be prescribed if required. If more extensive treatment is required then our cosmetic dentist will discuss this with you in depth during your initial consultation.

Every case is different and to give a definitive answer we would advise that you have a consultation here at Selsdon Dental Surgery. Upon making a detailed assessment the examining dentist will be able to inform you as to whether gum reshaping is suitable for you and what specific benefits the procedure will have in your individual case. Alternatively, upon consultation, the assessing dentist may suggest and alternative treatment which is better suited to your needs. In some cases, patients looking to have gum reshaping may require more complex surgery to adjust the bone and teeth.
